In Valencia, where the complex known as the City of Arts and Sciences stands today, there once stood one of the city’s most iconic industrial zones. It was situated on the banks of the old Turia River channel, near its mouth, next to the port. These industries were mainly dedicated to the production of fertilizers for agriculture and represented the classic image of industry: enormous warehouses, towering smokestacks, storage tanks, smoke, and the noise of colossal machines. In 1990, the Cross factory, the main facility in this complex, closed its doors and was demolished due to a lack of institutional protection. During this period, the artist Xavier Monsalvatje photographed, filmed, and painted the decline of this industrial area in Valencia, where this spectacular architecture fell into neglect and was subsequently destroyed. This series of silkscreen prints is a reflection of his memories.
