About me

Xavier Monsalvatje (Godella, Valencia, 1965).

He graduated in the specialty of artistic ceramics at the School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts of Valencia in 1988. He chose ceramics because at that time he was working at a ceramic factory and collaborated with his brother Jorge, also a ceramist. He was a pupil of the ceramist Enric Mestre.

Upon completion of his studies, he obtained a scholarship from the European Union to expand his knowledge of artistic ceramics in Caldas de Rainha, Portugal. In 1989 he was invited to the creative ceramics course at the School of Ceramics in Manises and in 1990 he graduated in the specialty of screen printing at the School of Art and Design in Valencia, since he has always been interested in graphic process. In 1996, he was one of the founding members of the Purgatori Artists Society.

Since 1992 his work has been divided between ceramics, painting, graphic work, drawing and installation, focusing on the study of industrial architecture and urban planning. In 1998 he founded La-Corporación together with other artists to support and safeguard Industrial Heritage.

In 2010 he was awarded a scholarship by the Bornholm Kuntsmuseum as an artist-in-residence at the Mobelfabriken within the Ceramic Context event. Throughout 2011 he was a guest ceramist in the ceramic department of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and at the University of Chico in California, in the US and also to exhibit his work at the Museum of Albarracin, Teruel, invited by the Santa María Foundation. In 2012 he was awarded a scholarship by the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, USA as resident artist.

In 2013, he was appointed member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), based in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 2015, he received an artist-in-residence scholarship from the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taipei in Taiwan.

In 2016, the Kohler Art Center in his Art / Industry program in Sheboygan awards him a scholarship to work at their facilities in Kohler, Wisconsin, United States. He wins the Ciudad de Castellón National Ceramic Prize and the Antonio Pérez Foundation organizes an exhibition at its locations in Cuenca and San Clemente.

In 2018 he was an artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, USA. and guest artist at The Wedge Ceramic Studio, Reno, Nevada, USA.

In 2019 his project In Permanent Danger was exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, within the Revelations Fair invited by the Fundesarte Foundation.

In 2022 he was awarded the National Prize for Contemporary Ceramics by the Spanish Association of Ceramic Cities.

His work has been included in group exhibitions and is represented in public and private collections in Mexico, Finland, the United States, Portugal, Austria, the Republic of Panama, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, England, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Mali, Argentina, Ukraine, Croatia, Namibia, Italy, Turkey and Taiwan, among other countries.

Currently he combines his work in the workshop with the teaching of ceramic courses.
